There were plenty of other reasons why Ron Paul is unfit to be President of the United States (not the least of which is that he belongs to the Republican party \u2013 anyone who genuinely believes in a Libertarian platform cannot, in good conscience, stand by the Republicans).\u00a0 A fast look at his voting record \u2013 the insinuation of prayer into schools, the laissez-faire <\/em>economic policies, his insistence that the government should be interfering in the choices women make about the health of their own bodies, any of these should \u2013 and do \u2013 disqualify him from serious consideration.<\/p>\n

But as of yesterday, we have a new one.\u00a0 What is it, you might wonder?<\/p>\n

It is this:\u00a0 that we should just leave disaster victims to fend for themselves.\u00a0 That the government\u2019s response to natural disaster should amount to: \u201cfuck \u2018em.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his own words:\u00a0<\/a> “We should be like 1900; we should be like 1940, 1950, 1960, I live on the Gulf Coast; we deal with hurricanes all the time. Galveston is in my district.”<\/p>\n

For those of you not familiar with Galveston, it was, until 1900, the busiest port in the entire Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n

Until it got leveled by a hurricane.\u00a0 Leveled?\u00a0 Leveled.\u00a0 Somewhere between 6,000 and 12,000 people were killed overnight, including about half of the family of the US Weather Bureau\u2019s section director \u2013 Isaac Cline \u2013 who had insisted adamantly that not only did Galveston not need a sea-wall, but that no storm of significance could actually hit the island.\u00a0 Oops.\u00a0 For a good recounting, I highly recommend the book \u201cIsaac\u2019s Storm\u201d (link below \u2013 full disclosure: that\u2019s an affiliate link, and if you buy a copy I\u2019ll probably make fifty cents or a buck).<\/p>\n

But back to the topic \u2013 Ron Paul basically thinks we waste money in weather warnings, in disaster response.\u00a0 He wants budget cuts in exchange for hurricane relief.<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 Do you realize how fucking mercenary that is?\u00a0 He\u2019s holding victims of disaster hostage to political ends.\u00a0 And they\u2019re not even smart<\/strong> ends, they\u2019re ideological bullshit.<\/p>\n

Sorry, Ron, but here\u2019s a big message from the rest of us who believe in the phrase \u201cUnited we stand, divided we fall\u201d:<\/p>\n

Fuck you.<\/p>\n
